Mark your calendars to attend Open Arms Housing’s annual fundraiser, Open Arms – Open Doors, on Monday, September 24, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Pepco Edison Place Gallery, 702 Eighth Street, NW. You will receive your formal invitation in the mail to which you can RSVP by return envelope or online.
You won’t want to miss hearing our keynote speaker, Rosanne Haggerty, President and CEO of Community Solutions, who is an internationally recognized leader in providing innovative strategies to end homelessness. We will also present several awards to members of the DC community who have been particularly helpful to our organization.
Delicious refreshments will be served! Please join us for this event, our major fundraiser of the year, which raises funds that are critically needed to support our residents.
Cafritz Foundation Awards Challenge Grant
The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, the largest private, independent, local foundation focused exclusively on the Washington, DC metropolitan area, has made us an exciting offer. Along with a $40,000 outright grant, the Foundation has given us a Challenge Grant. The Foundation will match our contributions, up to $10,000 -- dollar for dollar. That means that every dollar contributed will count for two!
Please consider increasing your support for Open Arms to maximize the value of this incredibly generous matching grant. Your contributions help Open Arms purchase household and personal items for new clients; provide transportation for clients to essential community resources; and furnish clients’ apartments! Thank you, Cafritz Foundation!
Women in Housing and Finance Foundation Steps Up Again
The Women in Housing and Finance (WHF) Foundation has stepped up again – this month, they presented Open Arms with a check for $5,000! Since 2010, the WHF Foundation has donated more than $40,000 in partnership grants to Open Arms. The WHF Foundation is comprised of members of Women in Housing and Finance, Inc., an organization of professionals in the fields of housing and finance, who dedicate their resources to help disadvantaged women and their families in the Washington area. In 2016, WHF Foundation provided a Mother’s Day brunch to OAH clients at The Dunbar. Last year, on Earth Day, WHF members planted beds of flowers in front of The Dunbar and at Owen House. Thank you, WHF Foundation!
Open Arms TRIPLES the Number of Clients We Serve!
We are now providing housing and services for 62 additional women at scattered sites in apartment buildings located throughout Washington. That number is added to the 20 formerly homeless women we house at our two apartment buildings in Washington, DC -- the Dunbar in the Truxton Circle neighborhood and Owen House in the Trinidad neighborhood. These are women who previously slept in public places; navigated in wheelchairs while living in shelters; suffered from cancer while living on the streets, and who have a wide range of mental health issues. Thank you for your support for our ladies!
